The La Sportiva NZ Speed Climbing National Championships and IFSC Oceania Continental Championships.

Climbing New Zealand and the Bay of Plenty Sport Climbing Association are super excited to be hosting these two spectacular events right here in Mount Maunganui.

If you managed to catch the two New Zealand Olympians in action in Paris’24, then you will definitely want to get down to Blake park to watch them live!

Speed climbing is the fastest Olympic sport with the NZ Men scaling the 15m wall in just a little over 5 seconds. It is fast and exhilarating and fun to watch. Under the pressure of competition there are mistakes and slips and athletes racing to get to the top first, it is a great spectacle.

The competition will start in the morning on the 10m Junior route called the ‘Pacific K-route’. NZ records on this route are around 6-8 seconds. After lunch will see the Senior athletes racing to become National Champions in their perspective grades on the 15m route. The NZ and Oceania records for this route are the times set at the Olympics by Sarah Tetzlaff and Julian David of 8.3 seconds and 5.2 seconds respectively.

After the national championship event finishes, the Oceania final will start at 5pm. Come and cheer on the Kiwis as they battle the Aussies for the crown.

Spectators are most welcome to come down and join in the festive atmosphere next to the cricket oval at Blake Park. Bring a blanket and a picnic and come and watch the action and cheer on our local Speed Climbing legends. Spectator entry is free, we would love to have you there.
