For one day only, Tauranga city centre will hear a sound it hasn’t in over a decade – the return of heritage passenger trains! Glenbrook Vintage Railway is bringing you the rare opportunity to climb aboard and experience our city and coastline the way generations once did, with vintage passenger trains departing from Tauranga city centre.

Make a day of it and explore the Flavours of Plenty Festival, browse the waterfront markets, visit local attractions, grab a bite to eat from our local eateries and soak up all the city centre has to offer as the trains roll in.

What’s happening:

  • The Mount Maunganui Express
Travel from Tauranga’s harbour edge through estuaries, wetlands, Te Puna, Ōmokoroa, Pahoia and Apata, toward the Kaimai foothills, crossing the Wainui River Viaduct before reaching Whatakao and returning.
  • The Kaimai Coast Express
Travel from the Tauranga waterfront across the Matapihi Rail Bridge and causeway, through Matapihi and on to Mount Maunganui, arriving beside the Port of Tauranga and Bay Oval before returning to the city.<
  • Kaimai Express
Climb aboard the Kaimai Express and experience a rare trip through the 8.9km Kaimai Tunnel to Tauranga and return aboard a heritage diesel-hauled private train.
