Emancipation is a mixed-media painting exhibition that transforms discarded materials into artworks that move between abstraction and personal narrative. Through this process of transformation, the exhibition reflects on ideas of release, renewal, and the possibility of new meaning emerging from what has been discarded.
Fiorella Silva Pérez is a visual artist who immigrated to New Zealand from Uruguay with her two sons and currently resides in Mount Maunganui. Her work explores contemporary issues affecting different aspects of society. She has long been interested in themes such as racism, violence, migration, poverty, environmental issues, and history, seeking to express these concerns through her art.
In her practice, the artist combines performance and mixed media, employing a wide range of techniques including oil painting, three-dimensional assemblage, sculpture, and carving. In her most recent work, Fiorella collects plastic and other debris from New Zealand beaches and melts these materials onto reused canvases, transforming environmental waste into layered surfaces that reflect both damage and resilience in the natural world.
