Creative Community Kai: Welcome New Migrants to the Western Bay of Plenty & Beyond

Free event – Sponsored by Western Bay of Plenty District Council

You are warmly invited to a special event created to welcome new members of the community to the Western Bay of Plenty and beyond. This is an opportunity to share your story, meet new people, and connect with just some of the creative and cultural opportunities available to you – and all while enjoying some communal kai! This is more than just a potluck; it’s a chance to build community through the universal language of food and art.

Part 1: Shared Kai & Welcome Gathering (10am – 12.30pm)
Bring a Plate:
All guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share along with its written recipe (in whichever language is preferrable for you). This could be a cherished family heirloom, a signature dish, or a new favourite you’ve discovered since moving to the area.
Welcome: You’ll be welcomed by representatives from the Western Bay of Plenty District Council, The Incubator Creative Hub, Historic Village, and mana whenua.
Connect: Eat, connect, and form new friendships.

Part 2: Creative Recipe Interpretation (1 – 3pm)
This creative session will allow you to transform your dish into a unique piece of art. Guided by a tutor, you’ll use mixed media to create an artwork inspired by your recipe. No artistic experience required! Your finished artwork will be photographed (anonymity is welcome), becoming a lasting part of a special project.

The Creative Community Kai Recipe Book
Your artwork and recipe won’t just be a memory; they will be compiled into a beautiful keepsake publication—a community recipe book. This book will serve as a living archive and a creative legacy, celebrating the rich diversity and stories within our region. As a participant, you will be kept updated on the development of this publication.
